# How to Tell If Your Speakers Are Out of Phase

## What does out of phase sound like?

Speakers are out of phase when one is wired positive to negative, so it pushes while the other pulls. The signs are thin bass, a vocal that sounds wide and hollow instead of centred, and an image you cannot place. Confirm it by comparing an in-phase and an out-of-phase test tone, then swap the wires on one speaker only.

What “out of phase” means:
A speaker cone moves out on the positive half of the signal and in on the negative half. When both speakers are wired the same way, they move together, and sound that is identical in both channels — the kick, the bass, the lead vocal — reinforces in the middle of the room.
If one speaker's wires are reversed, that speaker moves in while the other moves out. Strictly this is a polarity inversion rather than a phase shift, but everyone calls it being out of phase. The two speakers now work against each other for everything that is the same in both channels.

The signs:
- Bass is weak or thin, especially sitting between the speakers. Long bass wavelengths cancel most between two speakers moving in opposite directions.
- The centre is hollow. A vocal that should sit between the speakers sounds wide, vague or as if it comes from everywhere.
- The image moves when you move your head, and instruments are hard to place.
- On headphones, an inverted channel feels as if the sound is inside or behind your head.

Confirm it in a minute:
Listen rather than guess. Sit centred between the speakers at a moderate level:
- Play a test tone or pink noise identical in both channels (in phase), then the same signal with one channel inverted (out of phase).
- In phase should sound focused in the centre with fuller bass. Out of phase should sound wide, hollow and thin.
- If the “in phase” signal is the one that sounds hollow, your system is reversing one speaker, and the wiring is the first place to look.
- The polarity test on this site's free speaker test plays both signals at a 150 Hz tone, where the difference is easiest to hear.

Fix it:
- Switch the amplifier off. Check both ends of each speaker cable: red or + on the amplifier to red or + on the speaker, black or − to −.
- Speaker cable is usually marked on one conductor — a stripe, a ridge or text — so you can follow the same conductor from end to end.
- Reverse the wires on ONE speaker only. Reversing both leaves them out of phase with each other and changes nothing.
- Run the polarity test again. In phase should now be the fuller, centred one.

Where phase becomes a delivery failure:

Why it matters beyond home listening:
Polarity decides what you think you hear. Mix on a system with one speaker reversed and you will add bass that is not missing and push a centre that only sounds hollow in your room — and the mix will be wrong everywhere else.
The same principle is checked on multi-microphone recordings, where one reversed microphone can hollow out a whole drum kit or instrument. It is the reason polarity is one of the first things an engineer checks on an unfamiliar system.

## Frequently asked questions

### What happens if speakers are wired out of phase?

Sound that is the same in both channels partly cancels between the speakers. Bass gets thinner, the centre of the stereo image turns hollow and wide, and it becomes hard to place instruments. Nothing is damaged; the system just sounds wrong.

### Can out-of-phase speakers damage anything?

Reversed polarity does not harm the speakers or the amplifier. It only changes how the two speakers combine in the room. The risk is indirect: turning the volume or bass up to make up for the missing low end.

### How do I fix speakers that are out of phase?

Switch the amplifier off and reverse the positive and negative wires on one speaker only. Reversing both speakers leaves them out of phase with each other. Then play a polarity test to confirm the in-phase signal now sounds fuller.

### Is out of phase the same as reversed polarity?

Strictly, no. Reversed polarity flips the signal upside down at every frequency, while a phase shift delays it by an amount that varies with frequency. A speaker wired backwards has reversed polarity, but it is almost always described as out of phase.

### Can headphones be out of phase?

Yes, if one driver or cable is wired backwards, or a source inverts one channel. It usually feels as if the sound sits inside or behind your head, and bass is weaker. A polarity test on headphones makes it obvious.
