# Cinema Advert Audio — UK and Gulf Specifications

## What audio does a cinema advert need?

Cinema adverts are not measured in LUFS. In the UK, Digital Cinema Media fails any advert whose Leq(m) exceeds 82 dB, measured to ISO 21727, and requires a 5.1 mix at 48 kHz/24-bit, in sync at 24 fps, with no leader and no sync pop. In the UAE, Motivate Val Morgan asks for Dolby Stereo at a maximum of 82 dB.

82 dB Leq(m) loudness ceiling (UK and Gulf cinema — not a LUFS figure) · 24 fps cinema frame rate (a 25 fps UK advert runs 4% longer) · 48 kHz / 24-bit audio format (DCM fails anything else) · 2 masters UK and Gulf (the channel layout and sync rules conflict)

Cinema is measured in Leq(m), not LUFS:
Broadcast and streaming loudness is measured to ITU-R BS.1770 and written in LUFS or LKFS. Cinema advertising is not. Digital Cinema Media in the UK and Motivate Val Morgan in the Gulf both set a ceiling of 82 dB Leq — a loudness level averaged over the length of the commercial. DCM measures it as Leq(m) to ISO 21727, BS 5550-7.4.2 and the SAWA recommendations of 2000; MVM's documents cite the Dolby LEQ meter.
The two scales do not convert into each other. A spot that passes Clearcast at −23 LUFS says nothing about whether it passes a cinema check, and a LUFS meter cannot answer that question. The cinema version is its own deliverable, made to its own measurement.

UK — Digital Cinema Media's pass/fail list:
DCM's 2026 production requirements publish the checks its audio QC, run by 4cine, applies to every submission. A 5.1 mix is required for all copy, and any one of these fails it:
- Leq(m) above 82 dB, measured in accordance with ISO 21727, BS 5550-7.4.2 and the SAWA Standards and Recommendations of 2000.
- Anything other than a 48 kHz sample rate and 24-bit depth.
- A sync pop.
- A broadband LFE channel.
- Only LR stereo inside a wider channel layout. 5.1 goes as a complete set of single-track WAV files, all the same length, named CLIENT NAME_CONTENT TITLE VERSION.CHANNEL ID.wav.
- An immersive mix, where one is made, goes as an unencrypted IAB track file (MXF) to SMPTE ST 429-18, ST 2098-2 and RDD 57 — and still needs a separate 5.1 mix for cinemas without an immersive system. 4cine measures the full immersive file, not a rendered proxy.

The timing rules that sit under the checklist:
- All audio must be in sync with picture at 24 frames per second.
- No leader: the first audio sample is the start of the sound for the very first image frame.
- The file must be the exact duration of the picture at 24 fps — exactly 2000 audio samples per image frame.
- Audio description, where it is supplied, goes to DCM as a separate WAV file, which it embeds in the DCP for AD screenings.
- DCM advises allowing at least 48 hours to prepare final assets and 24 hours for copy-clearance submission.

UAE and Saudi Arabia — Motivate Val Morgan:
Motivate Val Morgan sells on-screen advertising in VOX, Reel and AMC cinemas, among others. Its 2026 rate cards carry the material requirements:
- UAE: one DCP for each location, picture at 1998×1080, and sound "in Dolby Stereo at maximum 82dB". The advertiser supplies a high-resolution .mov at 1998×1080, with audio as a full mix or as separate tracks with sync beeps.
- Saudi Arabia: a high-resolution .mov at 1998×1080; MVM handles DCP production, quality check and censorship itself.
- MVM's fuller audio requirements, as published on its Kuwait card in 2023: separate, unmixed tracks for each element, such as voice-over and music, as AIFF or WAV; unprocessed by filters like "maximize" or "normalize"; a sync signal at the beginning of each track; and a stereo reference mix on the video file.
- For a finished DCP supplied to MVM, the same card asks for audio at exactly 48 kHz at exactly 24 fps, with a presentation level not exceeding 82 dB Leq, averaged over the length of the commercial on the Dolby LEQ meter.

⚠️ One advert, two conflicting rules:
Put the two documents side by side and one set of files cannot satisfy both. DCM fails a sync pop; MVM asks for a sync signal at the start of every separate track. DCM fails stereo sitting inside a 5.1 layout and wants six discrete channels; MVM's UAE card specifies Dolby Stereo. DCM wants a finished mix conformed to 24 fps; MVM will take unprocessed elements and build the cinema package itself.
So a campaign running in London and Dubai needs two cinema masters, each made for its market's checks — planned at the mix, not discovered when the first one comes back rejected.

Frame rate: why a UK cinema advert runs 4% longer:
- Cinema runs at 24 fps. DCM accepts picture at 24 or 25 fps, and slows 25 fps picture down to 24 fps on the DCP.
- The audio has to follow. A mix made against 25 fps picture must be stretched to 24 fps before it is delivered, so the advert runs 4% slower and longer in cinema. DCM states that it charges no additional fee for the overrun.
- DCM also asks that the audio is mixed against the same picture that is supplied to it, to avoid sync problems.

## Frequently asked questions

### What loudness do cinema adverts need?

A maximum of 82 dB Leq, in both the UK and the Gulf. Digital Cinema Media fails any advert whose Leq(m) exceeds 82 dB, measured to ISO 21727; Motivate Val Morgan states a maximum of 82 dB on the Dolby LEQ meter, averaged over the length of the commercial. It is not a LUFS figure, and a broadcast master's −23 LUFS says nothing about it.

### Can I check a cinema advert's loudness with a LUFS meter?

No. LUFS is the ITU-R BS.1770 measurement used for broadcast and streaming; cinema advertising is measured as Leq on a cinema-calibrated meter, and the two do not convert. A LUFS meter tells you whether the TV version passes, not whether the cinema version will.

### Why would DCM reject a cinema advert for a sync pop?

Because its published checks fail a sync pop outright. The audio must start on the first frame of picture with no leader — the first audio sample is the start of the sound for the first image — and the file must be exactly the length of the picture at 24 fps.

### Do cinema adverts in the UAE need a 5.1 mix?

Not according to Motivate Val Morgan's 2026 UAE rate card, which specifies Dolby Stereo at a maximum of 82 dB, supplied as a full mix or as separate tracks with sync beeps. The UK is the opposite: DCM requires 5.1 and fails stereo inside a 5.1 layout, so a campaign in both markets needs two cinema masters.

### Why does a UK cinema advert run longer than the TV version?

UK television runs at 25 fps and cinema at 24. DCM slows 25 fps picture to 24 fps, so the audio has to be stretched to match before delivery and the advert runs 4% longer. DCM states that it charges no additional fee for the overrun.
