Music production quotes vary because the work is not one thing. Seven variables decide the number: how finished your material already is, whether players are live or programmed, who records the vocal, how many revision rounds are included, whether mastering is per track or across a record, which files you receive, and how compressed the schedule is.
“Music production” covers everything from tidying a finished demo to writing, arranging, recording live players, mixing and mastering a record from nothing. Those are not variations of one job; they are different jobs sharing a name. A quote that arrives without questions is either a guess or a different piece of work from the one you have in mind.
So the useful preparation is not shopping quotes. It is being able to answer two things precisely: what already exists, and what you need to walk away with. Everything below is a consequence of those two answers.
In rough order of how much each one shifts a quote:
Ask for the instrumental, the a cappella and the stems at the start, when they are a bounce, rather than later when they are a session reopening.
They are what let you licence the track for a video without the vocal, perform to a backing, hand it to a remixer, submit it for sync, or cut a shorter edit for social. A finished stereo master can do none of that. ⚠️ And a studio that has archived the session can produce them in an afternoon; a studio that has not cannot produce them at any price.
Not on paying too much for the production. It is on scoping too narrowly and extending later — commissioning a single, then discovering you need an instrumental, a radio edit and a shortened version for social, each priced separately after the fact, when the leverage has moved.
The second waste is paying for a full production on material that was not ready. Writing is cheaper than re-recording. A song that changes shape after the strings are tracked costs more than one that changed shape on a guitar.
⚠️ The third is buying mastering as a reflex. If the mix is not right, mastering will not rescue it, and a good engineer will say so rather than take the fee.
Five lines get you a real number instead of a range:
Send the five lines above and you get a real figure rather than a range — and if the honest answer is that the material is not ready yet, we will say so.
Projects the studio lists under Original Music Production, the service line this guide sits under.
Because the same phrase covers jobs that differ by an order of magnitude in work. A published figure is either wrong for your project or so hedged it tells you nothing. What is publishable is the list of variables above — which is what you actually need to scope a budget.
Sometimes, and not as often as people expect. A vocal recorded in an untreated room carries the room with it, and that either costs mixing time or produces a result nobody is happy with. If you are recording at home, the room matters more than the microphone.
For a release, yes — it is the stage that makes the record translate across systems and sit at a sensible level. But mastering cannot fix a mix. If the balance is wrong, the honest answer is to go back to the mix, and it is worth asking whoever you hire whether they will tell you that.
A single is one decision. An album is the relationship between tracks — relative loudness, tonal consistency, spacing and sequence, so the record plays as one piece. That work does not exist on a single, which is why album mastering is quoted differently.
Send the five lines above and you get a real figure rather than a range — and if the honest answer is that the material is not ready yet, we will say so.
